Scientific tourism is a collaborative project that provides local tourism companies with support for innovation and the development of travel products, where the dissemination of scientific information about climate change is integrated into the travel experience. The development of such travel products creates an opportunity for tourists to experience the reality of climate change in places where it is most visible, that is, in the Icelandic glacial landscape.

The project

The project is funded by the Icelandic Climate Fund and is a cooperation between local knowledge and innovation institutions and glacier tour companies that are all located in the municipality of Hornafjörður. The project consists of five related work packages:

  • Innovation: development of new tour products that address climate change
  • Education: design and implementation of short courses for tourism practitioners to increase their skills in communicating climate change knowledge
  • Knowledge: design and provision of content for climate science communication and nature interpretation during tours in protected areas.
  • Experience: engagement of tourists to become direct participants in research or monitoring activities concerning climate change science
  • Research: monitoring and analysing scientific tourism demand and supply and the dissemination of knowledge.
