Innovation

A key output of the Science Tourism project is the development of new tour products that address climate change and educate tourists about this important topic in the outdoors. The following tour products have been designed to increase tourists´ knowledge on climate change impacts, issues, and processes in Iceland.

Öræfaskólinn

The Öræfaskólinn is a 4-day tour with a guide through Öræfasveit, but it is a truly unique living educational center about the environment in a broad sense. The Öræfaskólinn offers glacier hiking, ice climbing and mountain tours, along with education designed to deepen the participants' understanding of the most important processes behind large-scale changes in the region. At the top of the agenda there are climate changes along with the shaping of land by glaciers and volcanic eruptions. More information can be obtained by contacting Öræfaskólinn.

Stepman

Stepman offers a family friendly, full-day field lab that introduces you to documenting climate change in the world around us. The tour focus on the rapidly changing environment of the Icelandic glaciers, learning how they are affected by rising temperatures and other shifts in weather patterns, and how you can best use your cameras and smart phones to document those changes. At the end of the tours you will compare your images to observations and images made by other visitors in weeks, months, and years past, correlated them to modern and historic maps, and learn how you can make our own observations available for future reference to other visitors and scientists alike.
